Human rights
UTA's mandate is grounded in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and carried out both through humanitarian activity in the field and through advocacy at the United Nations in Geneva.
“Our mandate, amongst others, include championing and promoting human rights in all ramifications, especially through humanitarian activities; ensuring that every human being has the right to all the basic necessities of life; encouraging the support of the less endowed nations by the more endowed nations and encouraging peaceful relations amongst communities.”
Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights sets out the rights to which every person is entitled. It is the reference point against which UTA frames its work, and in particular the principle that every human being has a right to the basic necessities of life.
Read the Declaration ↗UTA has held Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council since 1995. That status is what allows the organisation to address the Human Rights Council directly and to convene side-events during its sessions.
At the Human Rights Council
Secretary-General Amb. Dr. Eya Essif spoke on behalf of UTA in meetings of the Human Rights Council's 60th regular session, contributing to interactive dialogues on economic, social and cultural rights and on the rights of peasants and rural workers.
UTA organised a side-event at the 54th session of the UN Human Rights Council, moderated by Secretary-General Amb. Dr. Eya Essif. Speakers included the Libyan Minister of African Affairs and Rossana Roda, President of UTA-Italy.
At the United Nations
Sessions of the Economic and Social Council and its subsidiary bodies are published by the United Nations. UTA has held Special Consultative Status with ECOSOC since 1995.
